THERME NOLA

Designed a Bath House located in New Orleans, Louisiana in the Marigny neighborhood. The design concept was influenced by the previous Synthesis finding that 2 driving forces: Elysian Fields Avenue (Primary Axis of the neighborhood) and the Mississippi River led to the development of the business development. The building is made up of 3 main axes that represent the different time periods of Marigny's main axis: Canal, Railroad, and Avenue. The first axis is inspired by the Railroad and is the neutral axis that contains the changing rooms and transistioning spaces. The next axis is inspired by Elysian Fields Avenue and contains a dry sauna similar heat from hot tar on the road. The final axis is inspired by the canal and contains a sequence of pools from cold to hot to warm where the infinity pool overlooks a view down the road of downtown New Orleans. Renders were produced through Rhino, Illustrator, and Photoshop. A final model at 1/8" scale, built out of bass wood, represents the design content.

Diagrams:

Form - The site follows a typical shotgun footprint on one side but then angles on the other. The building needed to fit within the context so 2 shotgun houses were initially extruded from the site. Due to the sites odd shapes, the conformed to the sites geometry. The last step was to connect the two buildings to form one building but visibly see 3 axes from a distance.

Discovered Axis  - Main Axis of Marigny is discovered, expanding 5 miles from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain. This main axis served as the primary mode of transportation along with the river which led to the formation of business development along the axis and the river. When the 2 driving forces intersect, the business development is the most dense.

Evolution of Elysian Fields Avenue - Discovered the main Axis of Marigny and the evolution of it starting off as a canal in 1805 and then evolving into a railroad in 1830 and then it turning into a Avenue from 1932 to present. This historical timeline is applied to the design by each axis being inspired by the main axis in time.

Applied Axis - The design showcases 3 main axes, inspired by the previously discovered axis evolution. Each axis has a primary destination or view that represents the business development being the most dense which is also the main destination.
