LINKING THE DIVIDE

Diagrammed Tulane and Loyola Universities campus at a 1:100 scale. Combined analytical diagrams to come to a conclusion on a Synthesis Diagram. Designed a student gathering space located in the back of Richardson Memorial on Tulane Universities campus to create a gathering space for both Tulane and Loyola students and to create a direct access to a student gallery area located on the second floor. The design is inspired by the findings from the synthesis and analytical diagrams. An initial collage was created to study the scale of the area. A final model was produced out of layers of chipboard, bass wood, plexiglass, and metal. The renders were produced by photographs of the model, photoshop, and hand drawing.

Analytical Diagrams:

Edge/Link - Only 2 openings were found linking Tulane's campus to Loyola, directly on each campus

Roads/Pathway - Main roads outline the two campuses that are accessible by vehicles and pedestrians. The outlined pathways are sidewalks just for pedestrians on each campus.

Route to Main Destination - Specific pedestrian routes are highlighted to represent the fastest and most popular routes that pedestrians take to main destinations on Tulane's campus including Drawing Board Cafe, PJ's Coffee, Loyola's campus including the student union and off campus including Audubon Park.

Synthesis Diagram:

By combining the above diagrams, there is a dead zone, represented by a red dotted line where pedestrians use a and vehicles use this main road to travel in between campuses. The dead zone also shows that there is no shade or vegetation around this highly trafficked road. This proves to be a problem because students travel less to each campus because there is not a safe and effective route. This problem was addressed in the final design solution.

Design Solution:

Featured trees form a clear axis to link Tulane to Loyola's campus. The student gathering space can be used for art displays or functions overflowing from the second floor art galley. A covered screen both translucent and transparent acts as a focal point to lead students to the main destination or the student gallery. The dead zone is solved in this design by allowing the student to only cross a main street instead of walk down the road and is covered by plenty of trees.
