ASHLEY LIBYS

MAPPING
Researched and diagrammed maps of the delta at multiple scales. After studying the delta at 200,000 scale, the next set of diagrams was at 5000 scale, and then at a scale of 2500. A specific neighborhood was studied zooming into 400 scale of Marigny. The diagrams are developed through Illustrator, Photoshop, and Hand drafting. A final model was built at 600 scale ,made out of bass wood, to represent the final Synthesis finding. A Bathhouse design showcased in another page takes this finding and applies it to the design solution.
Analytical Diagrams of Delta + New Orleans:
Elevation - Diagrammed the elevation in the delta with the darkest tones being at the highest points. 200,000 scale
Transportation Then + Now - Diagrammed the transportation around the Mississippi River in the early 1800's, shown in a lighter lineweight and the current transportation including ship routes, trains, and roadways represented in the darkest lineweight. 5000 scale
Plantation vs Ward - Represents the plantation property lines in the past overlapping with the current ward property lines in present day. 5000 scale
100 Years of Built Fabrication - Represents the current built fabric in New Orleans shown in black, with the middle grey tone representing the french quarter and the lightest tone representing the part of the french quarter that was destroyed by a fire in the early 1800's. 2500 scale
Evolution of Parade Routes - Parades are an important part of New Orleans culture. This digram represents parade routes from different time periods. The dotted black line shows the routes in the 1800s, the bold black line shows the route in the 1900's, and the red shows the current routes. The lighter grid in the background is a representation of all of the roadways in New Orleans history. 2500 scale
Settlement Over Time - Represents New Orleans expansion out from the Mississippi River. The darker shades of grey is the earliest settlement.
Analytical Diagrams of Marigny:
Evolving Axis - A main axis expanding 5 miles from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchatrain has been the main route of axis into and out of Marigny. This axis started as a canal in 1805 and then transformed into a railroad in 1830, and is now Elysian Fields Avenue from 1932 to now.
Early Business Development - Business developed in the early 1800's around the the railroad the Mississippi river where companies could make the most profit around visitors.
Current Business Development - Business development in current day also shows an increase around Elysian Fields Avenue.
Synthesis Diagram:
By combining the early and current business development along with the evolution of the axis, the synthesis shows that there are 2 clear driving forces that led to the business development in Marigny, the main axis and the Mississippi River. Where these two driving forces meet is where the development is the most dense.
